My wife and I had 18 of our friends and family join us for our beautiful destination wedding in Antigua, Guatemala. Following four days spent in Antigua, we took our large group to Lake Atitlan for some rest and relaxation in one of the highlights of Guatemala.
While I had visited Lake Atitlan previously, the rest of our group had never been to Guatemala before and it was very important to me to give them a great experience. I contacted Pedro Solis to arrange a day tour for our group to expose them to some of the unique communities around Lake Atitlan. Pedro came highly recommended and after our group spent the day with him it was easy to see why.
Our day trip included stops in the village of San Juan and the largest Lake Atitlan community, Santiago Atitlan. Our group was picked up from our rental houses in San Marcos La Laguna and transported by private boat to our first stop in San Juan.
San Juan is a wonderful village which features cooperatives that sell traditional Guatemalan textiles, artwork, and weavings. Our group greatly enjoyed exploring this village and having the opportunity to shop for keepsakes that would capture the wonderful memories made in Guatemala. We also observed a traditional Guatemalan weaving demonstration that was very fascinating for our large group.
Following our time in San Juan we proceeded to the larger community of Santiago Atitlan. This stop provided an interesting contrast with Santiago Atitlan being busier, more chaotic, and very colourful. One of the highlights of our time in Santiago Atitlan was a one-of-a-kind experience visiting Maximon, the folk saint venerated by many Mayans in Guatemala’s Western Highlands. My wife and I received a wedding blessing from Maximon, an incredibly unique experience that we will undoubtedly never forget. Pedro picked an excellent restaurant in Santiago Atitlan to stop for lunch which yielded one of the best meals we had during our entire stay in Guatemala.
Our large group was thrilled with the experience Pedro provided us with. Many family and friends commented that this day trip was one of their highlights of the Guatemala trip. We found Pedro to be extremely knowledgeable, very personable, and a great communicator. His English is top notch. The experience he provided us greatly exceeded our expectations. Seeing how our group thoroughly enjoyed the day made me very glad that I chose Pedro to lead our group.
