I’m going to start off by saying that we had no idea what we were getting into. It all started when my wife and I were at a wedding telling some friends that we were thinking of going to Costa Rica for a trip. These particular friends happen to spend a lot of time in Central America, and immediately suggested we go to Guatemala instead. Specifically Lake Atitlan. So we started doing a little bit of research, and we came upon Tours Atitlan. Once we got in contact with Pedro and kind of let him know what we were interested in, he basically took charge and booked our whole trip for us. His brother Domingo was our tour guide pretty much the entire time, and was extremely friendly and personable, and we quickly became buddies. We went with another couple and they had a great time too. We stayed at Casa Eggedal, which has nothing to do with Tours Atitlan, but I would highly recommend looking into that. Tours Atitlan arranged transportation from the hotel to our first hike, to the restaurant for lunch, and then to our lodging, and then they picked us up each morning by boat to head to another adventure. We absolutely loved it. Hiking volcanos, seeing Mayan ruins, kayaking, jumping off rocks into the lake, visiting a cooperative of women weavers, visiting great restaurants, hiking ancient trails, rarely seeing other tourists… this was the best vacation we could have imagined.
