Day 3. Day trip to Volcan de Pacaya & Picnic Lunch - 9:00am - Our tour starts with a morning transfer (1:20hr) to the foothills of the active Pacaya volcano. The hike then begins with a fairly strenuous hike through wonderful pine forest up to the trickier molten rock area where hot steam seeps through crevices in the base of the volcano. Guests learn about the formation and evolution of the volcano as they traverse its ever changing face. On the hike we can enjoy great views to the northern volcanoes, the pacific lowlands and all the way to El Salvador. Half way down, we stop to enjoy a picnic lunch with the impressive volcano in close sight. Back at the base of the volcano, our support vehicle awaits us for our transfer back to Antigua.
Day 4.Transfer to Lake Atitlan & Iximche Mayan Site - 9:00am - Today, you'll travel with your private bilingual guide and driver 1.5hrs from Antigua to Iximche, a pre-Columbian Mayan Archeological Site, once the first capital of Guatemala. Here, you'll see ball courts, temples and one of Guatemala’s most important ceremonial centers surrounded by nature. After a relaxed walk into this wonderful site, our guide and driver will transfer you to Lake Atitlan and stay there for about two more nights at Hotel Atitlan or Similar.
Day 5. Experience the Lake Atitlan by local boat - 9:00am Guests are picked up from their hotel & transfer to San Juan La Laguna Village where they visit a local textile cooperative to see the back strap loom in use and to see how they still dye with natural dyes. After lunch guests will walk with their guide to find the house where the Maya God Maximon is living. Each year a different "brotherhood" has the privilege of taking care of their God so his location changes. Once with Maximon you may see local shaman performing rituals for local people and if you wish you can ask your guide to help you hire the services of a shaman for you to have a personal ceremony performed.
