Our Atitlan Birdwaching hot-Spot in Santa Cruz la Laguna

Starting Time: 6:00am a Voltan Adventures's expert guide will meet you at your hotel lobby; from here you will travel by boat to explore the trail of Santa Cruz la Laguna at Tzansiguan Trail.

Most of our birding trails are used by locals to cultivate coffee, avocado and other frutal trees. The Lake Atitlan Area is home for several great birds like, Blue-and-White Mockingbird, Blue-throated Motmot Prevost's Ground-Sparrow, Rufous Sabrewing hummingbird, and even the endemic Belted Flycatcher, Slate-throated Redstart, Azure Crowned hummingbird and between other great bird species. The tour last around 3 to 4hrs. Including a final check list provided by your expert guide.

Great birding and cultural tour of Guatemalan highlands

In March 2019 I for the first time visited Guatemala. Voltan adventures had arranged a 2-week itinerary based on my wish list of things to see and supplied a car, driver and guide; this is of course a luxurious arrangement. I was met by a fabulous young Mayan nature guide, who not only knew animals and plants, but also showed and explained to me many beautiful cultural aspects of Mayan culture. Through him I met many local people and could visit remote villages and sampled much tasty local food. It was by necessity somewhat of a whirlwind trip. I was impressed by the flexibility by which the itinerary could be adjusted. I traveled in South America dozens of times over a 50-year period; this trip was among the most enjoyable and satisfying.

Birdwatching with an expert local guide.

Isaias Soliz led my friend and I on an early morning birdwatching walk viewing the local environment in Santa Cruz La Laguna on Lake Atitlan. We had been tantalized by birds hiding in the lush trees all week, and our guide led us through the surrounding area capturing over 30 species of birds, allowing us to see and hear the birds that were part of the ecosystem surrounding Lake Atitlan. Our guides English was impeccable as was his knowledge of the birds, able to identify birds in flight and by song. He was able to locate the birds as they blended in among leaves and branches, and it was a thrill to see the birds in the safety of their habitats. Seeing a young indigo bunting was my first sight of that species, so it was a quiet though exciting walk. The guide’s pace was purposeful and focused, and we spent the morning immersed in the world of birds through the careful guidance of Isaias. If I am in the area again, I will definitely do another tour with him, and highly recommend him to those traveling through Guatemala and interested in experiencing the natural beauty of the country.
